"UTC's Employee Scholar Program pays up front for your college education, and gives you time off from work to study, then awards you company stock when you get a degree in an accredited program."

Overview
"Our goal is to have the best educated work force on the planet."
UTC Chairman George David
announcing UTC's
Employee Scholar Program
UTC believes that while no one can guarantee a job forever, we can ensure a future for all of our employees. And the best way to do that is by giving them the education they can use for a lifetime. Under the Employee Scholar Program, UTC pays costs for employees, both in the United States and internationally, who go back to school. That includes 100 percent of registration and tuition at schools that satisfy the Employee Scholar Program requirements (in the United States, regionally accredited; outside the United States, recognized by the country's ministry of education and listed in the most current version of World List of Universities [Macmillan]), required academic fees and course-required books.
Employees can obtain a degree in any field, whether or not it's job-related. Be it a bachelor's degree in art or a graduate degree in physics, eligible employees can receive paid time off up to 50% of total credits for all courses taken in an "academic period" up to a maximum of three hours per week. See policy for further clarification.
UTC further rewards its Employee Scholars when they graduate. U.S.-based employees who complete a bachelor's or graduate degree will be awarded $10,000 in UTC stock. Those who receive an associate's degree will be awarded $5,000 worth. And if they go on to complete a bachelor's, they'll receive an additional $5,000 in UTC stock -- proof that UTC understands its Employee Scholars to be a sound investment. Stock awards made outside the United States are subject to additional rules.
UTC Management Education
Once you enter the UTC network, the learning process never ends. While we offer a number of programs to help in the transition upon your arrival at UTC, we'll also give you the support you need throughout your career. One of the courses we've designed to enable mid-career employees a chance to broaden their horizons is a cooperative program between UTC and the Darden Graduate School of Business at the University of Virginia, one of the foremost business schools in the United States.
The primary focus of this educational program is to develop your leadership abilities - to examine the challenges involved in creating an engaging vision and translating that vision into action, both for existing and for newly acquired businesses. And with the increasing expertise that you'll gain during your time with UTC, the Darden program explores the ways in which you can improve and expand upon your personal leadership role. Through a series of intensive workshops, case studies, speaker series and networking sessions, you'll be able try and find answers to many of the questions facing mid-career employees.
Participants in the Darden program are invited to attend by senior colleagues. The courses are held on the campus in Charlottesville, Va., and at UTC's Leadership Center in Farmington, Conn. The program is divided into three levels: Senior Executive, Executive, and Emerging Leaders.
Senior Executives typically have had 15 or more years of experience and are in the top leadership of the company. Executive participants generally have at least 10 years of management experience, and Emerging Leaders have had 2 to 10 years of experience. Though the program itself varies slightly among the three levels, the primary focus is on a series of personal and team projects and case study development. Working with fellow employees from around the world, participants attend classes, work through issues that directly affect the company, and share best-practices with peers. At UTC, we believe that the only way to help our employees sharpen their leadership skills is by giving them the right tools-- and the Darden program is just one example.
